Child Support Division

The Office of the District Attorney of the Third Judicial District is proud to provide services to individuals in need of support and our team works hard to interview, establish, and enforce child support obligations.

Child support is an obligation of a parent to provide financial and medical support for the care and maintenance of a minor child/ren. The child support program is a federal/state partnership to collect child support. The Federal Child Support Enforcement Program was established in 1975 as Title IV-D of the Social Security Act primarily to reduce welfare cost. The Department of Children and Family Services places the responsibility for support of a child/ren on their parent's in an attempt to reduce the dependence on public assistance.

Child support cases are assigned to three (3) categories: intake, collections and parent location. Those services assist in establishing paternity, locating non-custodial parents, obtaining orders, modifying orders when appropriate, enforcing orders and collection and distribution.

Child Support services are available to any person responsible for a child who needs our services and who receives the following assistance from the State:

*Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC)
*Kinship Care Subsidy (KCSP)
*Foster Care Cases ((known as IV-E)
*Medicaid cases
*Non AFDC cases (No state assistance) who will have to pay a one-time fee of $25.00 as long as they keep the case open

Under the Uniform Interstate Family Support Act (UIFSA) which became effective in 1996, Louisiana can work across the borders in other states and countries.
